Best Accounting software for small business

Postby jjay on Fri Feb 22, 2008 9:24 am

I'm just starting out as a sole trader and want to know if anyone can recommend which accounting package I should start with. I've looked at MYOB business basics but I don't know anything about accounting so I don't know if this is a good first step. Also what about Quickbooks? Is this a better option?

Hi jjay

As you are just starting out, you can't go wrong with either of the entry level packages from MYOB (Business Basics) or Quickbooks (Quicken EasyStart). Both are under $150 and are upgradable if your business grows in complexity in the future.

As far as comparing MYOB vs Quickbooks, they are both pretty similar in terms of functionality and reporting capabilities. Quickbooks is slightly cheaper however it is easier to find people with MYOB knowledge due to their market dominance.

There is also a more detailed comparison within the information centre of the Books Onsite website at http://www.booksonsite.com.au/Content_C ... ofmyob.seo

Hope that helps.

Depending on your business needs, both Quickbooks & MYOB are great packages to use.

Quickbooks is a better program than MYOB, Quickbooks gives you a more flexible reporting system, even carrying formulas across to excel, as MYOB is quite limited. Recent updates has started to bring MYOB up to the same standed as Quickbooks, but still MYOB have a long way to go.

Also the interface with Quickbooks can be changed to suit your needs too.

Quickbooks also has a fantastic search function of which MYOB only have recently adaptered, I have noticed with multi user functions and larger files, MYOB tends to crash with its search function, if you require it to do too much. :(

Out of all the people I have trained threw the years they all say that quickbooks is the easier program to learn.

So generally it is up to you, my advice would be to purchase the trial versions of MYOB & Quickbooks play with them for a little while, then make your judgement from there. :D

Good Luck in what ever you do and if you need any training for either program please visit my Website
