It's true that the next step after MYOB/Quickbooks is a reasonably big jump (to SQL based, enterprise level accounting and ERP).

Depending on your turnover, your annual stock write-offs, your number of employees, service techs etc, you will find that the benefits of enterprise level accounting software can bring to your SME will see a Return on Investment within 12 months. We have certainly seen this type of return 'out in the wild'.

Cheers

MYOB these days has a powerful feature [M-Powered services] enabling payments from multiple bank accounts to be effected from within the software [restricted to the main trading banks - CBA, ANZ Westpac and with special arrangements NAB and Bendigo] when combined with seamless presentation of bank statement information [CBA, ANZ and Westpac] this is a huge time saver and drastically reduces the chance of error in a payment [especially superannuation payments] while being far easier then using ABA files and more secure for staff use than internet banking.

Zanria

There is no strict defination of a professional bookkeeper, nor is there a minimum level of educational qualification that is attached to defining a professional bookkeeper. Being a professional bookkeeper is all about being competent to perform bookkeeping duties.

There are however certain factors that would tend to indicate competency:
1. member of a professional accounting or bookkeeping association
2. relevant experience
3. educational qualifications
4. ongoing professional development or education

Hope this helps

It's always a good idea if you can, to pull the cash, rather than let it be pushed by your customer. However, processing direct debits does have an administration overhead, and needs to be done some days prior to the agreed transaction day

Hi,

I found your post searching for info on setting up QB and creating management accounts for a small construction company. We have a turnover of about $3m and are growing quickly. Do you know of any good book or web resources to assist.

Your findings of misplaced retentions is exactly what I'm facing. My client is currently unsure if they're invoiced and received the entire estimated amount.

I know that the MYOB v Quickbooks debate has been important in the past, but Xero is the future. No more installing, no more tax file updates, no more backup issues, no more hassles. I don't work for Xero or derive any money from them in any way, I just love thier software.
